Texters, Whoppers collide
By: Zean Macamay, Journal Online

COACH Chot Reyes and his Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters didn’t see action the other night, yet the results hit them so hard
they could feel the impact.

“With yesterday’s (Wednesday’s) outcome, every game is practically a must win for us from hereon,” said Reyes.

It was obvious that Reyes wasn’t rooting for Purefoods, one of three teams tied with the Texters before Wednesday’s games
at 7-4 (win-loss). But the Giants have found themselves now in solo third place after escaping with a 70-66 win against the
tough Barako Bull and this time hold a half a game lead over the defending champions.

Alaska, too, pulled off a classic win that snapped San Miguel Beer’s nine-game winning streak, a 122-116 overtime triumph
that somehow pulled the Aces away from the rest of the pack with its 10th win in 11 games in the race for the two outright
semi-finals berth.

Today, Talk ‘N Text must answer the call to pull through, or else its bid to finish in the top two may start disintegrating.

The Texters battle Burger King seeking no less than a victory, aiming not to be left behind in the chase for an automatic berth
in the Final Four even as Sta. Lucia Realty clashes with Coca-Cola in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in
Antipolo City.

The grind towards the top has been relatively rough for the Texters, who have been dropping games they shouldn’t have.
They’re fresh from a victory, a gripping 107-104 win over Coca-Cola, but suffered a painful 95-95 loss to Rain or Shine before
that in a game they appeared to be winning until the Elasto Painters came back from a 20-point deficit.

Talk ‘N Text won over Burger King when these two teams first met last Nov. 27. But at that time, the Whoppers were still at
the height of trying to get back their confidence after losing ace tough guard Wynne Arboleda for the rest of the season.

Although no longer capable of making it to the semis outright, the Whoppers’ main concern now is for them to advance to the
quarterfinals and avoid the perilous wild card stage. They’ve started to take one step at a time, and will come into the game
upbeat after a 101-99 victory over Rain or Shine last Sunday.

A victory by the Texters will give them a share of third spot with the Giants, a spot close enough to the Beermen’s 9-3 slate,
plus the confidence they need so much when they square off with the Aces Wednesday next week.

Sta. Lucia Realty is another team that has a mathematical chance of claiming an outright semis berth. But at 5-5, the
chances of staying close to the leaders and hoping probably for a playoff are remote.

Still, this does not diminish coach Boyet Fernandez’s outlook.

“We just have to stay and follow our system if we want to win and stay close to the leaders,” said Fernandez. “Coca-Cola has
been playing well for the past three games.”

The Realtors, the Philippine Cup champs two seasons ago, are coming off back-to-back losses to Purefoods (68-63) and
then to San Miguel Beer (110-94).

Yet the Tigers are not in a groove of their own. They have lost their last seven games, and have not won since a shocking 93-
79 win over Purefoods last Oct. 30.

Coach Bo Perasol, who took over the head coaching job from Kenneth Duremdes, is still looking for his first win with the
Tigers, who are in danger of missing the playoffs with a 1-10 record.
