PBA top guns face off
By Musong R. Castillo, Philippine Daily Inquirer
ALASKA’S SYSTEM and San Miguel's depth.
Those will be the strong points of both squads when they collide Wednesday, with Alaska putting the KFC-PBA Philippine
Cup lead on the line and the Beermen staking a nine-game winning streak against the Aces at the Araneta Coliseum in
Cubao.
Game time is at 7:30 p.m. with the odds favoring the red-hot Beermen, who can finally catch the Aces on top with a win
while also avenging one of two early setbacks suffered in opening their campaign here.
Alaska has led this tournament right from the start, including San Miguel as a victim in a 6-0 streak to open up the
tournament. The Aces then lost to Rain or Shine before racking up three straight wins.
Both teams are basically looking forward to this clash. The Beermen are hoping that they remain hot and the Aces eyeing a
repeat of an earlier victory against the Beermen.
Alaska inflicted a second straight loss on San Miguel about two months ago, in an out-of-town game. But that was the last
defeat that the Beermen have tasted.
Since that loss, San Miguel has won nine straight games by an average of 16 points.
And coach Siot Tanquingcen, when asked which team he thinks can beat his squad at this point, came up with a safe
answer but made special mention of Alaska, saying that it “will be a challenge to play Alaska now.”
The winner tonight could move possibly within three more victories of snagging an outright semifinal berth, which is also
the prime objective of Purefoods when it takes the floor at 5 p.m. against Barako Bull.
Purefoods is hot on a three-game winning streak while the Energy Boosters have been on a long slump, losing their last
seven games.
