Kings battle Giants
Manila Bulletin
Undermanned Barangay Ginebra faces another test this Sunday when the Gin Kings collide with the Purefoods Giants in
the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
Both riding on the crest of two-game winning streaks, the Kings (6-3) and the Giants (6-4) meet in the 6:30 p.m. main
encounter of another double-header which will have Rain or Shine (3-7) trying to extends its winning run to three in its 4 o’
clock joust with Burger King (3-7).
The Elasto Painters opened their campaign with six straight losses but the team owned by Terry Que and Raymund Yu
have won two straight games, beating the Coca-Coca Tigers, 92-84, on Nov. 25, and defending champion Talk ’N Text, 95-
93, last Wednesday.
The BK Whoppers, however, are holding a slight advantage with their 91-89 win over the Elasto Painters on October 24 in
Misamis Oriental.
But focus of the day will be on the Kings-Giants duel.
In its last game, Ginebra was without reigning Most Valuable Player (MVP) Jayjay Helterbrand and Mark Caguioa, who were
nursing knee injuries, as well as fellow guard Celino Cruz (fractured left wrist).
The three players are not expected to play today as Purefoods eyes to avenge its 87-95 setback last Oct. 18.
“We just have to continue playing even with the injuries,” Ginebra’s Jong Uichico, who got a big lift with the playmaking of
veteran guard Johnny Abarrientos in their last game. “It’s going to be tough considering we’re up against Purefoods.”
In their previous game, Ronald Tubid had 30 points, while Eric Menk contributed 18 and 10 rebounds. Abarrientos, 39,
finished with six, three boards and six assists in 29 minutes of play.
“Every game counts. All the teams are fighting for prime positions at the end of the second round. For us, we just want to be
consistent on defense. That is one aspect that we put emphasis on,” Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio said.
The Giants are also coming off an impressive win over the Sta. Lucia Realtors, 88-79, last Wednesday.
