Beermen try to extend streak against Realtors
The Philippine Star by Jun Mendoza
MANILA, Philippines - San Miguel and Barangay Ginebra seek to close in on league leader Alaska Milk as the Beermen and
the Kings take on separate opponents in the KFC PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum today.
The Beermen battle the Sta. Lucia Realtors at 7:30 p.m. hoping to stretch their amazing romp to nine games.
The Kings clash with the Barako Bull Energy Boosters earlier at 5 p.m. gunning for a second straight win that will keep their
hold of solo third place behind the Aces and the Beermen.
Alaska paces the field with a 9-1 card but San Miguel is the hottest team, being unbeaten in its last eight matches. Ginebra
is at third with a 6-3 card, closely followed by Talk n Text and Purefoods at 6-4 then Sta. Lucia at 5-4.
Barako Bull holds a 2-8 slate, just a game ahead of cellar-dweller Coca-Cola (1-9).
The Beermen and the Kings seek to fortify their current standings,
looking to repeat their first-round wins over the Realtors and the Energy
Boosters.
SMB clobbered SLR, 88-69, while Ginebra subdued Barako Bull, 94-86,
in their previous tiffs.
“We definitely face a tough game against San Miguel. But, as always, we’
ll be ready. We have to hold our own in rebounding and we have to
execute if we’re to beat them,” said SLR coach Boyet Fernandez.
“Barako Bull just loses games at endgame. We can allow them to be in
the game at the end,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico, expressing his
concern against coach Leo Isaac and his boys.
The Energy Boosters put up a tough stand in the first three quarters
before wavering at the finish as they suffered an 88-99 defeat to the Aces
at the start of the second round Sunday.
The Beermen whipped the BK Whoppers, 100-85 on the same day with
Arwind Santos again leading the SMB charge.
