AFTER starting the tournament with back-to-back losses, San Miguel Beer now looks very sharp and unquestionably
focused.
The Beermen once again dismantled an opponent, this time tearing down Sta. Lucia Realty, 88-69, and clinching their
fourth straight win in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup last night in Victorias City, Negros Occidental.
Arwind Santos scored 21 points including 16 after three periods, Dorian Pena added 14 and Dondon Hontiveros contributed
13 as San Miguel continued its steady climb to the top with a 4-2 (win-loss) record.
Gabby Espinas led with 17 points and Joseph Yeo 16 for the Realtors, who were only in the thick of the fight in the first
quarter of the game being supported by Phoenix Fuel.
The Beermen gave the Realtors a dose of their own medicine by clamping down on defense in the second quarter. They
held the Realtors to 11 points in the period while coming through with 24.
That came to be the beginning of the end for the Realtors. San Miguel, up by only 24-17 after the first 12 minutes, suddenly
found itself in command at the half 48-28 and never looked back.
Sta. Lucia dropped its second straight game and third overall for a 3-3 record.
Meantime, defending champion Talk ‘N Text hopes to rebound from its loss the last time around when it tackles Purefoods
today at the Araneta Coliseum.
Ginebra and Rain or Shine square off in the main 6:30 p.m. game, with the Gin Kings seeking a second straight win and
fourth overall.
The Tropang Texters, eyeing to become the first team to repeat as all-Filipino champion since Great Taste in 1985, suffered
a 100-90 loss to San Miguel last Oct. 28.
A victory by the Texters will keep them within striking distance of the leaders, led by Alaska, which the other night cruised to
its sixth consecutive victory by trouncing Burger King.
Like the Texters, the Giants are aching to get back into the win column after absorbing a stunning 93-79 defeat at the hands
of the Coca-Cola Tigers last Nov. 4.
Ginebra, on the other hand, is expected to once more play without key guards Mark Caguioa and Jay-Jay Helterbrand, who
are out with knee injuries.
