FOR the third straight game, Smart-Gilas met a team handled by an ex-national coach.
And for the third consecutive time, the Nationals fell way short from expectations and got a beating once more.
Ginebra hardly missed the services of Mark Caguioa and Eric Menk on injuries, holding down Smart-Gilas to only 2 points in
a 5-minute stretch in the fourth quarter and coasting to a 100-72 win yesterday in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta
Astrodome.
A 17-2 blast after the Nationals came to within 73-65 broke the game wide open, with the Gin Kings seizing a 90-65 lead
and keeping their unblemished record intact with their third win in a row to provisionally claim the solo lead.
Alaska was playing Coca-Cola as of press time eyeing also to go 3-0 (win-loss).
Ronald Tubid scored 22 points, including 4-for-7 from the 3-point territory, Jay-Jay Helterbrand had 15, and JC Intal and
Enrico Villanueva each collected 11 points and produced double-doubles by pulling down a combined 21 rebounds.
Willy Wilson also had a fine game, starting out and finishing with 8 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and committed no
turnover.
CJ Giles, Smart-Gilas’ 6-foot-11 American player who is being groomed for naturalization, did not see action but was on the
bench wearing street clothes. He is expected to leave the country after receiving news that his 4-year-old son was
diagnosed with a life-threatening blood disorder Wednesday.
“If their import was there it could have been a different story,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico, the man who called the
shots for the country’s national team in the 2002 Busan Asian Games.
“They really need a naturalized player. Over time, they will grow as a team. Right now, they already have good shooters and
they run their offense well.”
