Kings, Aces post routs
Miller triple double highlights Alaska win
By Musong R. Castillo, Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines - Barangay Ginebra coach Jong Uichico described Mark Caguioa as being just 80 percent of his real
self. That proved to be enough for the Kings to deal San Miguel Beer a 100-percent beating.

In his first game in more than a year, Caguioa scored 17 points in 28 minutes to help the Gin Kings to a 98-86 ripping of the
powerhouse Beermen in what could be considered as the first upset in the young KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta
Coliseum.

“He’s lost a step, lost a jump, but once he gets confidence like in today’s game, he will get to where he wants to be,” Uichico
said of Caguioa, who was not with the team when it lost Game 7 of the Fiesta Cup Finals to the Beermen two months ago.

“He’s really 80 percent and hopefully, he’ll get to 100 [percent] as the season goes on.”

In the first game, Willie Miller added spice to a victory that coach Tim Cone labelled as “no news” and registered the season’
s first triple-double in leading the Alaska Aces to a 99-83 rout of Barako Bull.

“They have everything to gain and nothing to lose,” Cone said of the lowly Barako Bull, which even led at the half. “It’s tough
to play a team like that.

“If we beat them, it won’t be much news. If they beat us, that’s news and we were pressured to perform.”

Miller scored 19 points, had 12 assists and 11 rebounds for the third triple double of his career to put to rest rumors that he
is unhappy with the Aces.

“When I learned after coming home from China (from the Fiba-Asia qualifying with the Philippine team) that I was still with
Alaska, I was very happy,” Miller, winner of two MVP awards, told scribes.

Ginebra inflicted the most damage on San Miguel in the third quarter when Caguioa scored 15 of the team’s 26 points that
had the Kings racing to several 16-point leads.

Eric Menk paced the Gin Kings with 18 points in just 19 minutes. He also grabbed nine rebounds in a surprisingly great
effort off the bench.

San Miguel, playing with little cohesion, was led by Danny Ildefonso’s 19 points. Mike Cortez was the only other player
scoring in twin digits with 10.

Reigning MVP Jay-Jay Helterbrand also had 17 points for the Kings.
