Wynne-less Whoppers face winless B’men
By Musong R. Castillo, Philippine Daily Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines - After giving away cornerstone Arwind Santos at the end of last season in a trade, and No. 1 choice
Japeth Aguilar after just one game, Burger King is now also without its leader, Wynne Arboleda, for the rest of the year.
And so the question: Is there life for the Whoppers after all of these?
“Of course,” Burger King coach Yeng Guiao said over the phone Tuesday, minutes after conducting practice without his
starting point guard and designating new roles for those who usually come off the bench for Arboleda.
“We’re used to the adversity,” said the firebrand mentor. “For us, we look at adversities as opportunities.”
Burger King takes the floor opposite rock-solid
San Miguel Beer, its first assignment in the KFC-
PBA Philippine Cup after that ugly attacking
incident last Friday that got Arboleda banned for
the rest of the season and left the Whoppers
without a team leader.
Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Cuneta Astrodome
with San Miguel expected to snap out of a two-
game slide because of the absence of Arboleda.
Chico Lanete, an acquisition in the off-season
from Barangay Ginebra, will most likely start out at
the point with Egay Billones to come off the bench.
Guiao also said that it is possible that Ronjay
Buenafe will be converted to the point in some
cases.
Arboleda was suspended for the rest of the
season without pay by the Office of the
Commissioner on Monday after attacking and
hitting Smart Gilas fan Alain Katigbac. The hard-
nosed guard stands to lose at least P2.73 million
in salaries until August next year.
Contacted by the Inquirer yesterday, Arboleda
begged off from giving a statement on his
sanction and said that he will let the issue die
down a bit before he does.
Meanwhile, Sta. Lucia and Talk ‘N Text seek second straight victories against opposite foes earlier, with the Tropang
Texters slugging it out with guest sister squad Smart Gilas in the 2:30 p.m. curtain-raiser.
A win against Smart Gilas would give the Texters a share of the early lead with idle Barangay Ginebra and Alaska, which
both tote 2-0 cards.
The Realtors, who spilled Coca-Cola in their season-opener last Friday, collide with Rain or Shine in the 5 p.m. contest with
Sta. Lucia tipped as the slight choice to inflict a second straight defeat on the Elasto Painters.
