Caguioa, Seigle back in PBA action
By Musong R. Castillo, Philippine Daily Inquirer

SAN MIGUEL AND BARANGAY GINEBRA will pick up from where they left off, with the sister squads clashing Wednesday in
a battle of heavyweights as the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup plays its first double-header of the season at the Araneta Coliseum
in Cubao.

The last time these two sides collided was in Game 7 of the Fiesta Cup Finals last season, a game which the Beermen
won convincingly at the expense of a Ginebra crew that missed Mark Caguioa the entire year.

Caguioa will make a comeback in the 7:30 p.m. contest with both knees now healthy, as he reassumes his role as the Gin
Kings’ heart, with reigning MVP Jay-Jay Helterbrand continuing to be the team’s soul.

“Any team can beat any team in this league,” San Miguel coach Siot Tanquingcen said when asked how he would rate his
powerhouse squad. “Every team beefed up in the off-season.

“I’d say it’s pretty balanced,” he said, pointing out to Caguioa’s return as
the factor why Ginebra is considered one of the top teams in the
    tournament.

Alaska, second placer to Talk ‘N Text here last year, slugs it out with a
grieving Barako Bull in the 5 p.m. contest.

The Energy Boosters are still mourning the loss of long-time team
manager and former league chair Tony Chua, who was one of the
    casualties of Tropical Storm “Ondoy.”

On paper, the Kings and the Beermen flaunt the most explosive rosters,
with San Miguel adding Arwind Santos into the mix and Ginebra
enlisting Rico Villanueva, a formidable undergoal presence, during the
    off-season.

It would be interesting to see how Santos would fit into the San Miguel
system, with old reliable Danny Seigle back in the fray and Dondon
    Hontiveros still at his prime.

Seigle missed most of last year because of a nagging back injury and his return has only bolstered the stock of the rock-
solid Beermen no end.

Two-time MVP Willie Miller will lead the Aces against a Barako Bull team that is listed as the weakest team in the field.

The Barako lost scoring ace Gabby Espinas to a trade with Sta. Lucia last year.
