Stags play Bombers, eye ‘bonus’

San Sebastian hopes to shrug off its stunning loss to Letran as it battles Jose Rizal University today in the NCAA seniors
basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The Stags hope to rebound from their 63-80 setback to the Knights last month, which ended their record-breaking 15-game
winning run, and inch closer to bagging the first ‘twice-to-beat’ slot in the ‘Final Four’ at 4 p.m.
Both teams were supposed to meet last Sept. 28, but the game was called off due to storm ‘Ondoy’.
With the pressure of attaining a rare sweep and an automatic finals berth gone, San Sebastian’s main focus right now is to
have a better placing in the playoffs.
With a 15-1 record, the Stags are one game ahead of the 14-2
Heavy Bombers, who are on a seven-game winning streak.
Jose Rizal is trailing defending champion San Beda by half-a-
game in the race for the second ‘twice-to-beat’ slot in the ‘Final
Four’.
“Mabuti na natalo kami para habang maaga pa lang ay makita na
yung mga pagkakamali namin at ma-correct namin tungo sa mas
mabibigat na laban. It has been a good run na manalo kami ng
15 straight games,” said Stags coach Ato Agustin.
Although Jimbo Aquino and Calvin Abueva gave their usual
numbers against Letran, rookie center Ian Sangalang was a non-
factor for San Sebastian, as he scored only six points, a far cry
from his career-high 28 points in their 100-66 win over Arellano
University.
Coach Ariel Vanguardia was not convinced on Jose Rizal University’s 85-81 win over ousted Angeles University Foundation
two weeks ago.
“We should be aggressive lalo na kapag kalaban namin ang mga Final Four teams. How can we compete if we can’t be
aggressive on both ends of the floor,” said Vanguardia.
College of Saint Benilde (5-11) and University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (3-13) collide in the first game at 2 p.m.
