Tamaraws or Warriors?
By: Theodore P. Jurado, Journal Online

DESPITE having a huge psychological edge against a beleaguered Far Eastern University squad, University of the East
coach Lawrence Chongson does not believe the momentum is on their side.

“The series is still even. We just tied the series. Masyadong malayo pa. We will just keep on pushing,” said Chongson after
the Warriors downed the Tamaraws, 84-74, in their ‘Final Four’ duel last Saturday.

Third-ranked UE and second seed FEU cross paths for the right to meet defending champion Ateneo in the best-of-three
finals in today’s ‘sudden death’ semis playoff of the UAAP seniors basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

Both the Warriors and the Tamaraws are 0-2 against the Blue Eagles this season.

Ateneo, which easily disposed of fourth-ranked
University of Santo Tomas in their semis series
last Sunday, is currently on a 11-game winning
    streak.

UE maximized the absence of Mark Barroca, who
will be out of the season for FEU due to issues
on his alleged involvement on game-fixing whose
roots came from his sub-par performance at the
latter part of the elimination stage.

Without Barroca, Paul Lee waxed hot, as he fired
    18 of his career-high 26 points in the three-point
area to help the Warriors hammer out the 10-
    point win.

UE, which last won in 1985, hopes to achieve its
second finals appearance in three seasons.

The Warriors last entered the championship in
2007, in which they automatically made it after
completing a rare 14-game sweep of
    eliminations.

But UE faltered in the best-of-three
championship, as the Recto-based cagers were
swept by La Salle, which was then coming back
    from a one-year suspension.

“We have not won for the last 24 years, sobrang tagal na.  I hope we can pull thru so we can break the long jinx we have,”
said Chongson, who took over from Dindo Pumaren in the off-season.

The Tamaraws hopes to pick up the pieces from last week’s nightmare, which came at a wrong time.

“Maganda naman ang first half namin pero hindi namin nasustain sa second half dahil nakawala si Lee. Talagang malaki
ang epekto ng pagkawala ni Barroca, naging butas ang backcourt namin,” said FEU coach Glenn Capacio.

Reserve guard Jens Knuttel is a doubtful starter, as he pulled his hamstring in the second period of their game last
Saturday.

The Tamaraws, which has won 19 crowns, hopes to achieve their first finals appearance in four years.

Bannered by now pro Arwind Santos, FEU’s last championship came in 2005.
