THE SAMAHANG BASKETBOL NG Pilipinas reiterated yesterday that it has not signed a contract with controversial cager Japeth Aguilar, saying all the 6-foot-9 slotman has been receiving while practicing with the Smart Gilas RP developmental pool are food and practice allowances.
“No negotiation has been made,” said SBP executive director Noli Eala. “We have to wait for the outcome of his discussion with Burger King.”
Aguilar joined the Smart Gilas squad on a trip to Singapore, where it plays the Singapore Slingers today.
“We have yet to offer him anything,” said Eala. “He has to settle his obligation with Burger King first before we discuss a possible contract with SBP.”
Joining Aguilar are the equally controversial Mark Barroca, naturalization target CJ Giles, former Ateneo ace Chris Tiu and a pair of Filipino-Australians—Sebastian Salinas and Matthew Schmechtig.
“Should Japeth [sign with] us, we will treat him like any other player,” said Eala.
Smart Gilas aims to bring the RP team back to the Olympics.
