Marquez not thinking of Pacquiao yet
By Dennis Principe, Philippine Daily Inquirer
MEXICAN SUPERSTAR JUAN MANUEL Marquez said Wednesday he only has American No. 1 Floyd Mayweather Jr. in mind
when he climbs the ring to face the undefeated former pound-for-pound king in Las Vegas this weekend.
The one person he isn’t thinking of? Reigning pound-for-pound champ and Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao.
“Mayweather is next, so I’m not thinking of any other fight,” Marquez told the Inquirer via an overseas phone call. “Mayweather is
the only opponent in my mind because for me, this is my toughest bout.”
Marquez is set to rumble opposite Mayweather Jr. in the card dubbed “Number One, Numero Uno” set this Saturday (Sunday in
Manila) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Marquez’s comments came at the heels of remarks by Pacquiao
trainer Freddie Roach that the Filipino’s camp is eyeing Marquez
next. Pacquiao will challenge Miguel Cotto for the Puerto Rican’s
WBO welterweight title on Nov. 14, also at the MGM Grand.
“I don’t want to think about his fight with Cotto or who my next
opponent will be,” insisted Marquez. “It’s all about Mayweather Jr. for
me.”
Marquez has actually been the one harping for a fight against
Pacquiao before landing the Mayweather contract. Marquez’s
insistence that he won both previous matches against the Filipino
icon is what prodded Roach’s remark.
“I want one more shot [at Marquez],” Roach told reporters in New York
during the launch of the Pacquiao-Cotto fight. “I want Manny to beat
him so [the Marquez camp] will stop whining about the other fights
and just shut up.”
