Bombers snap Lions' streak

MARC Cagoco fired 19 points as Jose Rizal University snapped San Beda College’s 12-game winning run with a 77-64 victory
in the NCAA seniors basketball tournament yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
The result had the Heavy Bombers tying the Red Lions in second place at 13-2, paving the way for a heated race in the fight for
the remaining twice-to-beat incentive in the semifinals.
Both teams figured out for the Season 84 championship last year which the Lions won in a do-or-die Game 3.
Garvo Lanete led San Beda with 16 points and Bam-Bam Gamalinda added 15. But the Mendiola-based school only got a
measly seven from American rookie Sudan Daniel.
Prior to the match, Daniel exploded for a personal-best 31 points in the Lions’ 96-81 win over the Bombers in the first round.
“I’ll tell you a secret, John Wilson has a flu and fever in this game, but he decided to play,” revealed Jose Rizal coach Ariel
Vanguardia later.
“He played 27 minutes but he just lost steam. Thankfully, Marc
Cagoco was there to save us,” he added.
Earlier, Letran unleashed a strong fourth quarter attack as it turned
back Perpetual Help, 80-60, yesterday to assure itself of at least a
playoff for the last Final Four berth.
Kevin Alas poured in a career-high 19 points, including 10 in the final
period when the Knights broke the game wide open, to seal their 11th
win in 16 matches and gain at least a knockout duel for the last berth
in the next round.
“We’re happy because we’re close to clinching a Final Four spot,” said
Letran coach Louie Alas.
The younger Alas also gifted his father his 100th NCAA for the school
he steered to eight Final Four stints and three titles in nine seasons
he coach for the Muralla-based school.
“This is also my 100th win as a coach in the NCAA so this makes it extra special,” said Alas.
It wasn’t easy though.
With skipper RJ Jazul sick and fellow Smart Gilas Pilipinas veteran Rey Guevarra hobbled by foul trouble, the Knights struggled
in the first three quarters, allowing the Altas to get into a position for a possible upset.
But Alas bailed the Knights out by sparking a blistering run he highlighted with a pair of three-point plays.
The Altas fell to their 12th setback against three wins.
In Juniors’ action, Letran drew strength from Jarelan Tampus’ 29-point explosion as it turned back a stubborn Perpetual Help
side, 88-81, to post its 16th straight win or two wins closer from completing an amazing elimination round sweep.
If it happens, the Squires will clinch an automatic slot in the best-of-three championship series while leaving the next best three
teams contesting the other finals berth in a stepladder semis format.
The Red Cubs, for their part, overpowered the Altalettes, 85-63, to remain at second place with a 14-1 record.
