THE heart of a champion.
Reigning titleholder Ateneo roared back from an 18 point deficit to edge out Far Eastern University, 74-73, and clinch the no. 1
spot in the Final Four of the UAAP seniors basketball tournament last night at the Araneta Coliseum.
Eric Salamat and Jai Reyes carried the fight for the Blue Eagles as main man Rabeh Al-Hussaini was hobbled by foul trouble,
sparking the team’s morale-boosting rally from a big 39-57 hole to carve out the thrilling win.
The victory allowed the defending champions to finish with a 13-1 record for the second straight season and now face fourth-
ranked University of Santo Tomas in the Final Four that starts next weekend.
The loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the Tamaraws, who choke at crunch time by failing to execute several of their plays.
They finished the eliminations with an 11-3 record, second behind the Eagles, and forge a duel with no. 3 seed University of
the East in the other semifinal pairing.
As the top two teams at the end of the elims, both the Eagles and Tamaraws enjoy a twice-to-beat edge over their respective
foes.
“Our mission is accomplished as far as getting the No. 1 seed is concerned. Now, we can focus on the semis,” said Blue
Eagles mentor Norman Black.
FEU, which needed to win by more than five points to clinch the no. 1 spot, had one final shot at sending the game into
overtime, but Reil Cervantes missed his second foul shot in the last 2.1 seconds for the final margin.
Salamat collected 20 points, three assists and three steals while Reyes added 13 for Ateneo.
Paul Sanga shot 19 markers while Aldrech Ramos chipped in 16 and 16 boards for the Tamaraws.
In the first game, Adamson capped its best finish in three years with a 74-61 win over University of the Philippines.
Eric Camson had 13 markers while Jan Colina added 12 and 11 boards for the Falcons, who ended their elims campaign
with a two-game winning streak.
Adamson actually tied La Salle with similar 5-9 marks, but the San Marcelino-based school took the fifth place owing to a
higher quotient.
The sixth place finish by the Green Archers, who missed the Final Four for the first time since the league adopted the format in
1994, was their worst in the last 23 years.
Woody Co registered 13 points while Arvin Braganza added 10 markers, six rebounds, four assists and two steals for the
Fighting Maroons.
UP finished its season with a 3-11 record to tie National University, but the Diliman dribblers ended up at last place due to
inferior quotient.
Meanwhile, reigning two-time champion UP Pep Squad and many-time titlist UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe renew their rivalry
at 2 p.m. today in the UAAP cheerdance competition at the Big Dome.
In the juniors division at the Filoil Flying V Arena, UST Tiger Cubs clinched the second twice-to-beat slot in the Final Four by
subduing the La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers, 65-60, for an 11-3 card.
The Tiger Cubs were able to avoid going into a playoff for the No. 2 slot as FEU Baby Tamaraws beat defending champion
Ateneo Blue Eaglets, 84-80, where scoring sensation Terrence Romeo fired 50 points.
