Tams, Eagles dispute top spot
Journal Online

DEFENDING champion Ateneo and Far Eastern University clash today for the right to claim the top spot in the UAAP
seniors basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

Both teams are already assured of a twice-to-beat incentive in the Final Four, although the Eagles have the inside
track in clinching the no. 1 slot going to the semifinals.

The Eagles hold a superior record (12-1) than the Tamaraws (11-2), and a win in their 4 p.m. duel will set them up to
a semifinals showdown with no. 4 University of Santo Tomas, the only team in the Final Four with a losing record (6-
8).

A loss by the Tamaraws relegate them at no. 2 and a face off with no. 3 team University of the East (10-4).

The Tamaraws could end up snatching the top spot should they beat the defending champions by more than five
points.

The Eagles currently hold the tiebreaker by virtue of their 63-59 victory against the Tamaraws during the season-
opener last July 11.

The Blue Eagles are currently the hottest team in the league with their nine-game winning streak.

Hoping to duplicate their impressive 13-1 record last season on the way to winning the championship, Ateneo has
not lost since bowing to University of the Philippines, 58-68, last July 26.

“We want the No. 1 slot. That will be our aim on Saturday (today),” said coach Norman Black moments after the Blue
Eagles exacted revenge on the Fighting Maroons, 93-75, last Sunday.      (Theodore P. Jurado)
