EAC vs CSB, Arellano vs San Beda
ncaa.org.ph, Wed, Sep 9, 2009

Reigning three-peat champion San Beda shoots for the second Final Four berth even as Arellano U seeks to stay
alive in the semifinal race as the two collide today in the 85th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan
City.

The Lions clobbered the Perpetual Help Altas, 96-69, Friday to solidify their stranglehold of second place with a 12-1
(win-loss) slate and a win in their 4 p.m. showdown with the Chiefs would clinch it a place alongside the San
Sebastian Stags in the Final Four.

The Stags clinched the first spot in the post-season by smashing the Mapua Cardinals, 101-65, Monday while
extending their amazing run to 13 straight wins—the longest since the 1997 San Sebastian swept its way to the title in
12 games.

The Lions are also on a streak of 11 straight wins, three shy of the record they—then a team mentored by Frankie Lim’
s predecessor Koy Banal—posted when they went 14 straight matches without a loss during the 2006 season on
their way to the first of what had become a three-peat feat.

And Lim wants to leave no stones unturned.

“The game plan is to always come out aggressive at the start of the game and not give them a chance,” said Lim.

Truly, the first time these two teams met, the Lions jumped the gun on the Chiefs with a jackrabbit start and never
looked back to hammer out a trouble-free 102-74 triumph in the first round last July 6.

In that victory, Garvo Lanete and American Sudan Daniel delivered the most painful blows with the former finishing
with 20 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals and the latter 14 points, 10 caroms and seven blocks.

Interestingly, the 6’8” Daniel is coming off a solid effort against Perpetual Help with 17 points, eight boards and four
blocks while Lanete was equally impressive with 15 points, a career best 12 rebounds and three assists.

Arellano is currently at No. 5 with a 7-6 (win-loss) record, or two and a half games behind Letran with a 10-4 card.

It’s not the end of the world though for the Chiefs as they still have a realistic chance of entering the Final Four via the
backdoor if they could sweep their remaining five games and hope the Knights went on a downward spiral in their
last four outings.

“I keep telling my players there’s still hope and just keep on fighting,” said Arellano U mentor Junjie Ablan.

In the other game, St. Benilde aims to breathe some life to its flickering Final Four bid as it shoots for an important
win against first round tormentor Emilio Aguinaldo when the two clash at 2 p.m.

The Blazers are currently at distant sixth place with a 4-8 slate while the Generals, who should come into the game
confident following their 78-73 win over the former in the first round last July 27, are out of it all with a 3-10 mark.
