DEFENDING champion San Beda College seeks to formally advance into the Final Four today when it clashes with
skidding Arellano University in the NCAA seniors’ basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
A victory by the Red Lions in their 4 p.m. tussle will allow the four-peat seeking team to join undefeated San
Sebastian in the semi-finals and keep its drive burning to clinch one of two twice-to-beat incentives.
San Beda is protecting a slim one-game lead over Jose Rizal University (11-2), two teams that are expected to fight it
out for the No. 2 spot going into the crucial stretch of the eliminations.
The Stags bagged the first Final Four berth after registering its 13th straight win, the team’s longest winning streak
since they joined the league 40 years ago.
The Red Lions have an 11-game winning streak of their own, the longest since the Mendiola-based cagers strung up
14 in 2006.
The Chiefs, on the other hand, have a 7-6 record good for fifth place. They have lost their last two games.
Arellano is now trailing Letran by two and a half games behind in the race for the final semi-finals berth. Letran
possesses a 10-4 (win-loss) record.
“We wanted to keep ourselves sharp and play as a team going into the homestretch of the tournament,” said San
Beda mentor Frankie Lim.
In their first elimination round meeting, the Red Lions gave the Chiefs a lesson in basketball, 102-74.
San Beda will have playmaker Borgie Hermida back after missing two games due to an ankle injury. Others who will
have to contribute are rookie Sudan Daniel, Bam-Bam Gamalinda, Garvo Lanete and Jake Pascual.
